Quick Fashion Sketch of the Day: Find your style and express it!
Being constantly surrounded by quilting and craft sewing blogs has really skewed my sense of style. Pinterest is of little help either, the constant rotation of cheaply made fashion modeled by cellularly flawless models isn't what I'm after. To get away from trend-based fast fashion is so very hard in this age of information free-flow. It's incredibly difficult to find something you like.
I'm still searching for my own style, but increasingly I'm realizing that it's okay to not fit into one fashion label, or one fashion box. I love my dresses with pockets, I am swayed by trends. I love the carefree boho style, and enjoy the structured look of cyberpunk chic.
The Love to Sew Podcast did an episode a while ago on sewing frosting. I love this analogy. We love the shiny dresses on Pinterest and the couture gowns that walk down the red carpet, making them feels like decorating a cake - it's extravagant and creative and beautiful. At the same time we must ask ourselves "how many times am I realistically going to wear this?". As sewists we need to strike a balance between "sewing cake" and "sewing frosting".
Fashion is your personal brand. It's the business card for your personality, so why not be authentic? Be fearless!
